Reading Campaign Metrics

Key takeaway
Cost per lead and lead quality matter more than vanity metrics like reach or CTR alone.
A Meta Ads dashboard surfaces dozens of metrics, and knowing which ones actually matter for a local-service client is what separates a strategic media buyer from someone just clicking around the interface. For a lead-generation campaign, the metrics that matter most, roughly in order, are: cost per lead, lead quality/close rate (fed back from the client's own sales process), click-through rate (a useful diagnostic for creative strength), and cost per click (a secondary diagnostic, not a primary success metric).
Metrics like reach, impressions, and frequency are useful diagnostics — frequency climbing too high (generally above 3-4 within a week or two) is a real signal of ad fatigue worth acting on — but they are not success metrics on their own. A campaign can have excellent reach and a great CTR while still producing expensive, low-quality leads, so always trace performance back to the actual business outcome: booked jobs and revenue, not surface-level engagement.
When reviewing performance, always compare apples to apples: look at a meaningful time window (at minimum 5-7 days, ideally more once the campaign is stable) rather than reacting to a single bad day, which is often just normal day-to-day variance rather than a real trend.
